Askja volcano

 

Askja volcano, located in Iceland’s central highlands, has been rapidly inflating since 2021 - a sign of more magma coming into the chambers below .

Scientists have flocked to the volcano in recent years to test a terrifying theory that could have dire implications not just for Iceland, but for every person on the planet: Whether the rapid retreat of glaciers as a result of human-caused climate change will trigger increased volcanic activity.
